marni at h&m

Marni at H&M jacket and BCBG Max Azria pants

Photographed by Aryasesa Latuihamallo

I did not camp for Marni at H&M as I planned to but I was so lucky to get this white leather jacket. I also got the black sandals and the striped sweater. The jacket is a size bigger though, so I need to bring it to a tailor and see whether he/she could make it mine. Fingers crossed!

I left my heart in ocean beach

Topshop leather jacket; Comme des Garçons pants

It was a beautiful Sunday. I went to Sausalito with my friends and then watched San Francisco's sunset at the Ocean Beach. This may sounds cheesy, but my friends and I bonded over our love of camera and little wonderful moments. It's been six moments and I finally fall in love with San Francisco. It takes these amazing friends to help me realize how beautiful San Francisco really is. And now that my weekend before mid-term week is over, it is time for me to tie a headband on my head and get back to the game.

a gift from a friend of mine

My friend who is a broadcasting student at the Academy of Art University asked me to be a subject for his video. He wanted to interview a fashion blogger for his assignment in one of his broadcasting classes, so I pose and talk about fashion in front of his camera. However, the video that I'm showing you on this blog is a fake advertising, which is a gathered footages from our filming, that he made exclusively for me. The filming was spontaneous. He literally asked me to do the capturing on the day we were doing it! So please forgive my frizzy hair and last-minute styling. I'm also new to this kind of thing, so don't laugh! But please do give a hand clap to my friend Bimo Ganzar who made this awesome "advertising."

on haute couture

It is about time Karl Lagerfeld lifts us to the world above after drowning us in the sea at his Spring 2012 ready-to-wear collection for Chanel. He translates the beauty of space upon our head into a dazzling garment for Chanel Spring 2012 haute couture collection. Did he get inspired while glancing outside the window of his private jet or while he was watching Pan Am? No one knows. Either way, Lagerfeld is definitely in the mood for flying. The runway, which was transformed into an aircraft cabin, was filled with sheath dresses made by light tweed — some were plain and some were exquisitely embellished. The color palette hints colors of the sky. It varies from a day sky to midnight sky blue. Lagerfeld picks the 60s as a reference for an updated version of a Chanel classic tweed jacket and coat: wide neckline, puffy and three-quarter-length sleeves. It is not something new from Karl Lagerfeld, but wherever he tags us along, he brings Chanel’s spirit with him.

John Galliano’s shoes are hard to fill indeed. With two couture seasons in a row, there has not been a designer out there appointed to rule the house. Raf Simons or Marc Jacobs could be the one, but as far as Bernard Arnault is concerned, he is not ready to commit with a new designer. On the other hand, Bill Gayten is still wearing the helm in Christian Dior and his second couture show might stop Arnault from outsourcing the new creative director for the legendary house. Gayten pays homage to the founder of the house, Christian Dior, by adopting his infamous ‘New Look’ silhouette: tiny-waist, wide skirt, and hourglass shape. The idea of attaching X-ray print on the waist-hugging garments is keen and smart, as Gayten wants to unveil what the house has to offer. Additionally, the final ball gowns raise the question, “Would one of these dresses, or two, end up on Academy Awards’ red carpet?” After all, Cameron Diaz was pointing to some of the gowns from the front row.

Besides Gayten, Giambattista Valli is also on his second season in the couture show. And once again, he casts magic. A white cocoon cape with floral attached initiates the show, which immediately gives a serene feeling. The silhouette, the texture and the draping in the garment depict a chic French woman: elegant and daring, but romantic. The accessories — metal rose necklace, metal belt, and floral headdress — not only complement the garment but also elevate its shape to a maximum effect. This collection reveals Valli’s client. She is not only a woman who has exquisite taste, but also someone who has a captivating life and personality. His woman demands for attraction. Giambattista Valli may be new to haute couture, but he certainly understands the craft, and with his novel-glamour signature style he is definitely a couturier to watch.

To understand Jean Paul Gaultier’s haute couture show is never an easy task. His mind-twisting style always makes us wonder what he is up to, however that is what make his presentation one of the most intriguing fashion shows to watch. It is not surprising that Gaultier chooses Amy Winehouse as an inspiration for his latest collection. The man loves a scandal. And Winehouse’s behavior was full of it. If Amy Winehouse was a full-time housewife and lived in the 50s, this collection would be her costume exhibition. A ladylike silhouette with Winehouse’ exuberant hair and personal style — bright color, skin-baring garment, and a hint of old-school-rock — filled the runway. Fortunately, Gaultier’s signature is not missing in this collection — the corset-dress, sexy pantsuit, dramatic skirt — as it slays Amy Winehouse’s skanky personal style. Kinky-rock (in a good way) would be the best word to describe it.

the 84th academy awards

"Oh my god the red carpet has started!" My friend who sat in front of me screamed as she scrolled down her twitter page on her phone. I immediately raised my hand and asked the waiter to bring the cheque. I was having a lovely sunday brunch with my friends as a part of our Oscar day, but we completely forgot the time. I paid my steak and bacon, finished my coffee, grabbed my Johnny Ramli clutch and strutted toward my friend's apartment to watch Hollywood's biggest event of the year, the Academy Awards. I haven't watch all of the movies that are being nominated at the 84th Academy Awards, but I was hoping my favourite heroine from The Help — Minny Jackson who is played by Octavia Spencer — would snap the golden statue from Best Supporting Actress nomination. Fortunately she did. And it looked perfect with her Tadashi Shoji gown.

It was a relief that I did not miss the red carpet. It is one of the sacred rituals in awards show and the Academy Awards' red carpet is probably at the peak of it. Most of the actresses looked stunning in their exceeding-my-card-limit dresses, but the biggest surprise of the night was Gwyneth Paltrow. She stepped down the glory carpet in an all-white Tom Ford gown and cape. The dress is plain gorgeous, and Paltrow's figure is right for almost everything, but the cape over it was extraordinary. She looked unusual and non-traditional (thank god!) for Academy Awards' red carpet yet it works. It is the opposite effect of Helena Boham Carter's out-of-the-box style. Kristen Wiig was also the unpredictable one. She was wearing a blush-y J. Mendel gown with her I-did-not-do-anything-with-my-hair hair and she looked effortlessly beautiful. It tops her Balenciaga look at the Golden Globe. Her look made me made-up a scenario for her Oscar's night-out: she wake up from her power nap, call a limo, pull off that J. Mendel from her closet, apply a Giorgio Armani luminous silk foundation on her face and Chanel glossimer on her lips, shake her hair, and rush to the limo outside her house. Not too fancy for a comedian. On the other hand, Angelina Jolie who always end up in best-dressed list, stunned me again last night. It was not something new from her, but she looked undeniably striking in her black strapless Atelier Versace. And I have not mention the dangerously sexy slit that showed off her dangerously sexy leg. I was not sure about Emma Stone's red Giambattista Valli dress when she was on the red carpet, but later on the stage, when she was charmingly joke about her first time presenting for the Academy Awards, I was completely spelled. A dress always look better with a personality indeed. Another comedian who dazed me was one of the fabulous casts of Bridesmaids, Rose Bryne. Her white Elie Saab jumpsuit at the SAG Awards buzzed the fashion industry and her black Viviene Westwood is doing it again. Just like the fashion industry, since I saw The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo I have been mesmerized by Rooney Mara's medieval look. She has the quality to create a bizarre moment in a high-fashion way like Cate Blanchett in Givenchy Haute Couture at the last year Academy Awards, but her first Academy Awards' red carpet was not at that point. The white Givenchy Haute Couture dress she wore last night has a potential to make her looks like a fashion gothic angel, but she looked like she was wearing someone else's gown. She looked drowned in it. Another disappointment was Viola Davis. Her decision to take a break from her wig was daring but her Vera Wang gown was definitely a mistake.

The vibe in my friend's room got more intense as the red carpet show ended. Because my friends and I did some bidding with some of the categories, so the pressure was unavoidable. I opened a bottle of Moscato to chill my nerve, while my other friends were busy filling the snack bowls. Fortunately, as soon as Justin Bieber popped up in the screen looking more feminine rather than masculine we all got carried away to the show. And Billy Crystal did a terrific job in enlivening the Academy Awards. Some of the highlights of the show were when Octavia Spencer win the Best Supporting Actress category. It was a joyous moment for her and for myself. I adored her performance as a strong-harassed maid in The Help. I was also charmed by Jean Dujardin's I-just-won-an-oscar aura during her acceptance speech for winning the Best Actor category. I immediately put The Artist on the top of my to-see list. However, Meryl Streep won her third Oscar was the peak of my happiness. I was upset when she did not win for her role in The Devil Wears Prada and Julie & Julia, but this pays off. There were no surprises with the Academy's choices, all of the winners deserve the recognitions.

As Tom Cruise announced the winner for Best Motion Picture, one of my friends mentioned that he was starving. Turned out it has been almost seven hours since our last meal and my stomach started to complain as well. I won two bidding last night, which were for the Best Actress and the Best Original Screenplay. The losers had to do a set of push-up or sit-up (I did two sets for losing the best Documentary Feature and Sound Editing) and I think that's why some of us were starving before the show even ended. Watching the Academy Awards together with friends was the most fun I had in weeks. Laughing to the casts of Bridesmaids's hilarious joke and arguing about whether Natalie Portman's vintage Dior dress reminds us of watermelon or not are things that I would love to have annually. Just like awards season. If we are going to do it again next year, three bottles of Moscato and more popcorn are required.

glamking

Zara coat; Klé pants; Christian Loubutin shoes; Topman necklace; Johnny Ramli clutch

I planned to see San Francisco's sunset from Turtle Hill but turned out it was too foggy there and extremely cold. I barely saw anything. Rising to the peak of mr. Turtle wasn't an easy job. The steps were endless and the top was covered by sand, which did not go with my Christian Loubutin and Zara formula. I made it to the peak with my Loubutin mantled with sand, but as I expected, the fog hid the sun. The idea of glamking — glam-hiking — was a surreal idea at first, but to actually doing it was a suicidal idea (for my shoes that is). Lesson is learned!

come spring

When everybody is questioning whether Jason Wu autumn/winter 2012 collection — which potray his cultural background — is too literal or not, I on the other hand is putting down my shopping-wish-list for spring. There are so many to-die-for pieces like Dior Homme white suit and Yohji Yamamoto baggy pants that I really want to strike a pose in. For shoes, I crave for Burberry Prorsum moccasins as they would look great in summer days with just tee and shorts. I can't stop thinking about Prada 50s-inspired clutch. Bringing it to a party or event would definitely make me the It boy of the night. Even though these fashion pieces would upgrade my closet, my bank account does not compete with the price tag. I guess I have to follow what my mother used to say when I was a little boy, "just pick one!"
